CHARLOTTE BROOKING'S NOTEBOOK
plus a typed copy of her Diary of Events.

This page contains a confusing number of photostat copies of part of an old notebook of at least 90 pages. There is no title page or obvious beginning to the notebook. It appears to have been old and much used with loose inserts of differing sizes added. The photostats subsequently became jumbled which has made it difficult to identify the order of the original notebook. The contents relate to both the Brooking and Roope families. Many of the pages contain tightly drawn pedigrees along with biographical material and related subjects. One of these pages contain a pedigree of the main brooking descent (page 6) and therefore was probably towards the front of the manuscript. Helen Allen describes the photostats in one of her letters and states that she received them in their present condition.

The page numbering has possibly been added by my father with two or three exceptions by myself in an attempt to make sense of this manuscript. I have tried to arrange the pages in a way that replicates their position in the book e.g. left or right side but incorrect conclusions may have been made.

This is the transcript of the 'Diary of Events' to be found within the above notebook.

The Diary of Events from page 43 is of particular interest in giving both the dates of birth and of the Brooking/Roope families and the numerous comings and goings between 1824 and 1864. The individuals mentioned in the diary are mostly children and grandchildren of Charlotte Roope and Nicholas Brooking, with a few references to members of Charlotte's own Roope family, especially Susan Roope and William Newman Roope her siblings. Our own family are descended from Cabel Roope, another of her siblings.

My own notes as to who is whom are to be found at the end of this transcript along with one of the letters from Helen Allan to my father.
