THE MULEYS
This is an attempt to gather together meagre details relating to my mother and her family.

I have divided this document into two sections:
Stories from my mother Margaret Zahra Rawes.
Information gleamed from other sources.

STORIES FROM MY MOTHER

I became interested in family history in the mid 1960’s and would often ask my mother about her and my father’s family. In 1967 at my mother’s request my father sent me details of his family. Up to the time of my mother’s death in early 1975, I increasingly badgered her about her family background. I started to make a written record of everything my mother had told me about her family. I had finally persuaded her to try and find the Liverpool solicitors mentioned below, when she died, so cutting the link with the past forever. I now have many questions that I wished I had asked her. She may not however have been able to give me answers as when I persisted in my questioning she would either say she did not know or had forgotten many years ago during a loss of memory. Sometimes I would not need to give her a prompt, as she would voluntarily tell me something that she had just remembered. This lack of knowledge of her past was strangely echoed in my father who appeared to know virtually nothing despite being married to her for sixteen years. What he did know contradicted what my mother had told me. He thought she was born in California and her father had been in the British army!

During the many years since her death, several questions have sprung to mind: did she really know so little, was what she told me true, was there some dark secret? Perhaps I will never know but in the days of the Internet and records become ever more freely available my hopes in finding something become stronger. One of my reasons for recording this is to keep a record for my dear daughter Rowena.

1	ORIGIN OF THE MULEY’S
The Muleys were of Moorish descent, being descended from a Moorish Princess. Subsequently they settled in Ireland and from thence they travelled to America.

I remember something about them being descended from a survivor of one the ships in the Armada, shipwrecked on the coast of Ireland. This however may have been a suggestion raised when we were watching a television program about the subject.

[Muley is indeed an Arabic or Moorish name. It is associated with Rulers such as Boabdil the last King of Granada, and other Moroccan rulers.]

[There was a Muley who settled in Ireland prior to Louix XIV. (Irish Pedigrees (Soc. of Genealogists)) There are also other references to Muleys in Ireland, see elsewhere]

2	IN SEARCH OF A FORTUNE
An heiress of a wealthy estate somewhere in the north of England, fell in love with a penniless artist from London. Against her parents wishes they married and sailed to America via Liverpool. She was disinherited and ended her days in poverty. The parent or parents died and having no other relations and not making a will, the estate was held as intestate and the proceeds transferred to a Chancery holding. Many decades went by and when the heiress's daughter was 90 years old either a previous member of the family or my mother's grandfather became interested in the fortune. Apparently all the relevant papers were gathered enabling them to obtain the money, except the marriage certificate of the young runaway couple. The old lady could not remember where her parent’s marriage had taken place which was apparently in the north of England. So the fortune could not be claimed. My mother's grandfather and father spent years trying to find the marriage. My mother believed they used a Liverpool based firm of solicitors called either Eldridge or Aldridge.

[All the family papers and pedigrees were lost or stolen in 1937 while on transit from Santa Barbara, California to Grand Central Station, New York. In the late 1970's I made extensive enquiries as to the whereabouts of the Solicitors. Liverpool was heavily bombed during the second World War and many records were destroyed. There was no record of a firm of solicitors by the name of Eldridge or Aldridge. I visited the Law Courts in London where Chancery records are kept but not having the surname I had little chance of finding anything. The above was originally compiled shortly before my mother's death in 1975.]

3	------- MULEY

He was the father of Albert Muley. He became interested in the lost fortune and apparently spent many years gathering together all the documents needed to inherit. To prove his case he dealt with a firm of solicitors in Liverpool. He suffered from melancholy because he was not able to inherit his fortune. My mother thought he lived in Boston and was half French. He had black hair and blue eyes. A photographic portrait of him has survived.

[The portrait shows a rather distinguished gentleman, well dressed, slim with a full head of white hair. It is assumed that he was reasonably wealthy.]
===============================================================
4	ALBERT MULEY

He was my mother’s father. He had black hair and blue eyes, was 5ft 9in and right handed.

He could speak French and Spanish. He was a strong swimmer, a good yachtsman and an excellent horseman able to drive a team of six. On one occasion he stopped a runaway team of six in a town’s main street.

He travelled to France several times and Ireland at least once. There are two oil paintings by him, which survive. One is a beautiful lake and mountain scene from the west of Ireland.

He had strong beliefs, was an atheist and pacifist and had a strict sense of right and wrong. He considered the World to be full of bad people. He would not carry a passport or proof of identity as he considered himself a “Man of the World”. He was a member of a Druid society. He too tried to establish the link with the inheritance.

He was travelling back to America from France with his wife (marriage is assumed) Anna, when she died giving birth to my mother. He never got over her death and spent subsequent years travelling, often leaving Zahra with her governess for long periods.

He wished to raise his daughter in a world protected from other people. My mother never went to school but had a private governess to teach her. He did not want her to mix with other children and pick up bad influences. My mother never went to the movies, as they were considered too violent and decadent.

He was a part owner of a ranch and at one time a lumberjack. He served with the Canadian Mounted Police. He owned a car (my mother told me the name of the car but I can not recall it.) and a motorbike.

The last time my mother saw her father, he was standing on one of the decks of a ship leaving the quayside bound for Europe. He was standing by the rail and waving his stick to her.

He was a close friend of a well-known group of musicians but I can’t remember their names.

Albert was also related in some way to Lord Kitchener.

His small long-handled claw hammer survives.

Two photographs survive of Albert. One is a portrait taken of him seated, a slim handsome man sporting a moustache. The other is in a gold locket once fitted to a necklace. It was cut from a group photograph taken on the ranch. There was a 1960/70’s film hero (Denis Wheeler) who reminded my mother of him very much. My mother said that there was also a lost picture of him with a high-crowned Texan or sombrero hat.

He died suddenly from a heart attack on a Parisian street. He had been complaining about chest pains but a doctor thought nothing of it. My mother was eight at the time and if the date 20th June 1918 is correct, for her birth then his death would have been in 1926/7.

[I think my mother said he was only 35 but he looks older in the photograph and she may have wished to hide her age.]

[The paintings: shortly after my mother’s death I had the better one treated and framed.]

[It is possible that he owned a yacht as one of my mother’s American postcards is of a number of yachts at Miami. It was customary for yacht owners to have just such an official looking postcard taken of their yachts.]

[I checked the records of the Canadian Mounted Police without success. In any case one has to be a Canadian National.]

[Questions: Was Albert a conscientious objector? He presumably arrived back in America 20th June 1918 with a wife having a child. He was in Europe or France at the time of the 1st World War. Was he in the south of France where many Russians had settled and was there travelling restrictions?]

5	------ MULEY

Brother of Albert Muley. He had black. He climbed the Table Mountain at Cape Town, South Africa. He was ill at the time and died on top at a young age and before Albert died.

===============================================================
6	MARIA -------

Maria was a cousin of Albert Muley. I recorded her as niece to Albert’s father but she could have been a cousin on the side of Albert’s mother. She had black hair and blue eyes. There was a photograph of her that was in the lost trunk.

===============================================================
7	ANNA KARINA

Anna Karina had auburn hair. She was half Russian half French. She died from heart failure while giving birth to her daughter. She apparently had a narrow pelvis and it was this that caused complications. My mother did not want children and was terrified that the same thing might happen to her. Fortunately I was both early and small.

She had a sister who was an abbess in France with the name sister Teresa. She had large brown eyes rather like general De Gaule, and black hair.

A dress ring belonging to Anna survives.

[I wrote to virtually every nunnery in France in an effort to trace sister Teresa without any success.]

8	MARGARET ZAHRA MULEY IN AMERICA

CHILDHOOD:
My mother said that ‘Zahra’ was a family name. In England she was known as ‘Zahra’ with Margaret as her second name, however, she was almost certainly born Margaret Zahra. My mother’s birthday was the 20th of June, however, at 37 she decided to stay at 37 and from then after she hid her age. I believe she was born in 1918.

It is clear that her father was relatively wealthy and moved in a relatively high-social setting. She did not go to school but had a private governess to educate her. Her governess, whose name I forget was a strict puritan and gave her a very strict and austere religious upbringing, her education appears to have been to a high standard. She had a good command of English and was a good writer. She had learnt French but had forgotten most of it by the time I knew her. She had read the bible from cover to cover and knew much of it. She often commented that there were many bloodthirsty and unpleasant elements in the Old Testament. She was a good cook, dressmaker and knitter. She could ride a horse and drive a trap. She had a saddle in England but I can’t remember whether she had brought it from America, neither do I remember what happened to it although as a small child I vaguely remember it. She could play the piano to a high standard, one tune being the Bumble Bee, but had forgotten a lot of her music due to lack of practise. She could sing, loved to dance and could draw. She never learnt to swim and was very frightened of drowning. She didn’t like her austere guardian whom she said was cold and hard. She was taught not to have pride in herself because it was considered vain and ungodly. They constantly moved around so she was never able to gain long-term friendships. I don’t believe she had a happy childhood. She longed for her father’s returns, she idealised him. There is a photograph of her when she was a baby.

YOUNG WOMAN:
Her father’s tragic and sudden death when she was eight must have left a powerful impression on her. She was alone in the World having no relatives, being the last of the family. She said once that there was a millionaire couple who had wished to adopt her but she declined only later wishing she hadn’t. All she had was a governess and a guardian. I cannot now remember whether it was the same governess throughout her childhood although I suspect it was. Who the guardian was is not remembered. I have a vague memory the situation with the guardian was a private arrangement made by her father. However, as stated above, her father had money so one would have thought it must have been held in some kind trust for her. She said once that a lot of it went in the 1928 Wall Street crash and the rest went with her guardian, he emigrated to Australia, presumably when she came of age.

She grew up to be a great beauty as her portrait and pictures testify. She was 5ft 3½in tall and in her teens was slim with a 19in waist, in later life she put on weight. She was right handed and had a quick mind. When I knew her she spoke with an educated English accent but when speaking to an American one could hear a faint soft drawl. I have in my possession short recordings of her voice and singing voice. By nature she was a true Gemini! My mother had a very strong will and would not flinch from making someone feel small. She was a very kind person and had virtually no aggressive instincts against other creatures. She liked a man to be strong otherwise she could easily despise him. She had many contradictory characteristics, like being extraordinary brave and ridiculously fearful. Like her father, she was an atheist and had no time for Christianity, I was not baptised. I don’t think she was baptised either. My mother inherited the strong opinions about bringing up children from her father, but lack of money prevented her from giving me a private education. She loved animals and could never refuse a home to a stray. In later life, she coupled it with a powerful urge to never let go of an animal or person near her.

MIAMI TO LOS ANGELES:
There is a photograph taken of her in the gardens of the Mautilan Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida. I believe she first showed me the photograph in my early twenties. I asked her who was in the photograph. She was surprised, and gently admonished me for not recognising my mother. She said it was taken when she was 17. She told me that the little girl standing beside her was a Duchess. My mother wore a yellow dress in Miami and a handkerchief survives from that era.

She took part in a bet to hitchhike alone from Miami to Los Angeles within a certain amount of time and won a $1000. She bought postcards along the route that still survive along with others that she picked up during her journey to New York. She stayed in Santa Barbara for a while attempting to become an actress. Myrna Lois pushed passed her in a lift entrance. She went to the same dentist as Clarke Gable. She briefly went out with a Red Indian chief called Red Wing. They drove down the street with his long black hair and her long blonde hair waving in the wind.

In 1937 she travelled by train across the states ending at Grand Central Station. She stopped off on the way at Chicago and saw the great pens where the cattle from the prairies were held before slaughter and was disgusted and shocked. In Chicago she bought two Red Indian blankets that still survive. She also visited Niagara Falls. I asked her why she had come to England, especially as she was fond of criticizing the English whom she found dull, boring and arrogant, and she hated the cold English weather. She said that she came to England hoping to continue her families search for the lost inheritance but had never done anything about it.

THE TRUNK:
It was during the journey from Santa Barbara to New York that her trunk was lost. She had at least two cases, the large trunk that was sent by freight. In the trunk were all the family papers, documents, pedigrees, photographs, and silverware inherited from the Gordon family, Marquisses of Huntly. The pedigrees extended back to the Moors. All that remained of a whole family. The trunk never arrived in New York and despite much querying, was never traced.

IN ENGLAND:
In England she moved into the theatre and fashion world where she was described as an American Socialite. She became a friend of Arnold Mason the Portrait painter who acted as her agent. His portrait of her hangs in my living room. She was presented at Ascot and other venues in fashion garb and appeared in several national newspapers.

[Dictionary of First Names by Hanks & Hodges:
ZAHRA: from flower, blossom, from Zahora to shine or blossom. See also Zãhir and Zuhayr, Zahra was the family name of the Prophet’s mother. There is some dispute among early Arab historians as to whether this was originally a male or female name. Some say it was a female name adopted as a family name, while others maintain that it was the name of the Prophet’s grandfather adopted by his mother. In any case, it is now an exclusively female name and is widely used in many parts of the Arab world. Variant Zuhra.]

[The Mautilan Hotel was demolished many years ago.]

9	POSTCARDS

[Following is a list of the postcards that my mother collected as she travelled across America during 1936/7. An American Genealogist whom I had hired to trace the family, visited me, and looked at the postcards. It was he who realise that they followed a route across America starting at Miami. This, along with other indicators, led me to believe that Florida was the most likely place to look for the family.]

10	A CURSE:
While in America, the Muleys’ had a curse laid on them by a gipsy, a curse not only affecting the unfortunate recipient but the family as a whole. The curse decreed that the family would always be unhappy.

11	MISCELLANEOUS POSSESSIONS

Record of objects of mother brought with her from America in 1937.

Photograph of Albert Muley’s father
Costume or dress ring belonging to Anna Karina.
Photograph of Zahra as baby.
Photograph of Albert Muley in gold locket. The tiny photograph was cut from a larger photograph taken of a group photo on the ranch.
Gold locket once suspended by a necvk chain.
Photographic portrait of Albert Muley
Hammer belonging to Albert Muley
Two oil paintings of Irish lake scenes that my mother said had been painted by her father. One was restored and framed in mid 1970’s. The other is in very poor condition.
Photograph of Zahra seated, aged 17.
Handerkerchief.
Photograph of Mauntaban Hotel, Miami.
Postcards recorded elsewhere.
Photograph of Zahra taken in Southern California.
Second photograph taken in Southern California.
Two Red Indian blankets that my mother bought in Chicago. They were once much larger but were heavily used by my mother who then repaired them. I then had them on my bed for many years.
An incomplete hand-painted tea service stamped “France Depost” and coloured very pale blue with gold edging and leaves with pale maroon flowers. Ten complete pieces remaining. My mother didn’t look after things well and I remember when a cup, saucer or plate would get broken. I still have some broken pieces. My mother said they came from her side as opposed to from my father’s family. I had assumed they were from her family therefore had come with her from America but I may have assumed that. She may have picked them up after she came to England.
Along with the above are the meagre remnants of a white tea service with only one or two cups and saucers remaining.
