Valley Cottage, Bromley August 15th 1830

My Dear Brother,
In a letter I had a few days ago
from Marianne she desired me to write
to you when I wished to return home to take
my passage by the steam boat. I think
that as I have to come by sea the sooner
I get away the better, so I shall thank
you to take my passage for the 31st of this
month. The boat only leaves once a week on
Tuesdays and that is one of the days I have
a great dread of the sea sickness for I suffered
so much as I came and though I have been

told that it is not much more expence
by some of the coaches while the steam boat
can go yet I think as I shall have to
travel alone it will be better for me to come
by sea. I sincerely hope we may not have
such a passage as when I came.

I have been staying here with Mrs Palmer
above a fortnight. I have spent a most
delightfull time there is a neice of M P.
staying here just now with her husband
and his sister Miss Sainthill a very pleas[ant]
Irish girl. She and I went to town last Tues-
day and in the John Bazor who should --
but Miss Smith & Tom they were going to
have that evening by the boat. If you
see any of them soon pray give them my
love. I wrote to his father the same day.

[Page 3:]
I wrote to Marianne last, and on Tuesday
I received a very odd sort of a letter
from her, she neither says any thing
kind or unkind tho' I am sure by the
letter alltogether she is not pleased at
me for not writing to her sooner, do you
know what it is that Hellen Smith has
told Marianne. We have been completely
deluged with rain here for the last few
days, this morning it is very fine but ex-
ceedingly cold, on Saturday the fish-pond
was greatly overflown and the lawn
was quite a sheet of water.

I was to have stayed the remainder of
my time with Miss Rawes but last night
Captain Rawes said she wished me very kind
to spend some time there as he has as---

th--- you to do. Give my love
to all at home when you write
Tell Marianne that I shall
write to her in a few days
In-- give my love to my aunts.

(Addressed to Mr R W Hodgson, care of Ann Whitehead, 37 Manor Chase, Newcastle upon Tyne.)
