Dear Madam,
        I understand from Mr. L.
Rawes, of Send Hill, that you, like
myself, are interested in the
history of the Rawes family.
My grandfather was James Rawes, born
6 Dec 1796. His brothers & sisters were
Mary, Ap. 28 1782, William Nov 29 1784,
John, Nov 7 1786, John, May 3, 1788, Joseph,
May 15, 1790, Agnes, July 14. 1792, Robert
Lancaster, Oct 5, 1794, (James Dec. 6, 1796)
Wilson Feb. 25, 1799, Richard Feb. 11. 1801.
I obtained these dates from the family
bible, now in possession of Mr. John
Rawes, Hodge Close, when I was up in

[Page two:]
the Lakes last year. I also met Mr. Richard
Rawes, Elterwater, who surmises that
William R. Nov 29, 1784 was his grandfather.
So far I have been unable to trace the
father of this generation. I have one
record, though unconfirmed by any register,
that he may have been one Lancelot, who
died on May 2. 1810. aged 52. But I
don't know where, or where he lived.
There is a large line of Rawes in the
register at Shap, but I have not
been able to fit them in. They date
from about 1500. John Rawes, Stainton,
nr Penrith, who breeds cattle, is of this
branch. Should you be able to
help me to trace the family tree further
back, I should be very grateful for any
information. I am at present at the
above address on a holiday. My home
address being - Incents, Berkhamsted,
Herts.

          Yrs Truly
              P.L. Rawes

Miss A Rawes
Tanner Croft.

Notes:-
Percy Lea Rawes was born in Portugal 6th March 1883 and died Berkhamsted 12 January 1954.

Mr L Rawes of Send Hill, Surrey, was Lancelot Rawes (Newling Line), brother to Mr. John Rawes (JP Line), of Hodge Close, Langdale. John was the owner of the 'William Rawes' bible, see 'Some Rawes Bibles'. Richard Rawes (Ontario Line), of Elterwater, Langdale, was the younger brother of Lancelot and John.

John Rawes of 'Brooklyn' Stainton Dacre (1867-1945), of the Renshaw Line, comes from a family originating from Shap, Westmorland. Relationship with the above mentioned Rawes' is not known, it is at least earlier than 1720.

Dear Miss Rawes,
            Thank you fro your reply.
What you say about Lancelot Rawes
living at Seatoller I can confirm,
from records I obtained in Borrowdale
before the War. Can you tell me
his wife's full name - was it Elizabeth
& do you know where she is buried?
or Betty Lancaster,     ^     Do you know
whether this man had brothers Joseph,
Wilson, Richard, & a sister Agnes?
Lancelot had a son John, who died in
infancy in June 1787, which probably
explains why your gd father was also
named John. Lancelot was a slater

[Page two:]
& I think moved to Seatoller from Grange
after the death of the boy John. I am
glad to have confirmed the fact about
his name, because I was not certain
of it. My gd father - James - was educated
in Bromley, near London, at an uncle's
school - perhaps the Joseph I have already
mentioned. I shall certainly avail
myself of your kind offer to see the
letters in your possession, next time
I am up in the Lakes.

          Yours truly
              P.Lea Rawes.

Notes:-
The Rawes Academy was owned by Richard Rawes (1742-1814), elder brother of Lancelot of Seatoller. There was a Joseph (1797-1814) who taught at the academy but he was James's (1796-1851) contemporary.

Dear Miss Rawes,
I hope to come & see you
next Tuesday, but it will depend of course
on what progress my eldest sister will
make from here on Monday. Should we
arrive that afternoon we hope we
may find you in on Wed. morning.
We are going to spend a few days in
the Lake District.

          Yours truly
              P.L. Rawes.

I shall bring what records I have

Dear Miss Rawes,
After our visit to you this
last Autumn we went to Patterdale one
day. There found the marriage certificate
in the register of the church of Lancelot
Rawes & Elizabeth Lancaster 25. April
1781. He is buried in Rosthwaite church,
having died on May 2. 1810, aged 51.
I was not able to find out from where
Lancelot came by the former entry, but I
am hoping the daughter of my eldest
uncle may give some help as I hear

[Page two:]
she is sending me some facts about
the family found among some of her
father's papers - should they be of interest
& should you care for them I will send
you them.
Would it be asking too much of you if
I might have a copy of the letters you
showed me in Sept. from Lancelot to his
son in Jamaica & the other of his brother?
I should be grateful if you could send
me one.

          Yours truly
              P.L. Rawes.

Notes:-
Percy's eldest uncle was Francis Curteis Rawes. It is not known which daughter Percy is refering to, Francis had three daughters, Alice, Agnes and Ada.

Dear Miss Rawes,
I am very sorry to find
from your letter that I never
acknowledged your copy of the letters
of Lanty R's. boys. Please accept
my apologies for this oversight.
I am still unable to get further
back than the date of his marriage
at Patterdale to Elizabeth Lancaster
on 25t April 1781. From the records

[Page two:]
at Shap his parents may have been
William & Isabella, but of this am
not certain - it is just guess work
from other details & dates.

          Yours truly
              P.L. Rawes.

Notes:-
Percy Lea was right in suggesting that William & Isabella were Lanty's parents. Lanty was baptised at Shap, to William and Isabella Rawes of Wetsleddale 7th September 1759. Transcripts of Lanty & Betty's letters are to be found elsewhere on this website.
