              Tanner Croft
              Grasmere,
          Jan. 27. 1935 Westmorland.

Dear Mr Rawes,
            We were very interested
to hear of The result of your visit
to Patterdale. Evidently those were
the old people mentioned in
Lancelots letter.

Thank you I should be
glad to know any more facts
should you gain any from
the papers you mention.
It would be interesting to
know further back and
where Lancelot came from
I send you the copies of
letters you wished for, very

[Page two:]
glad to do so. I was not at
home when your letter arrived,
hence the delay in sending them.
It is odd how now more of our
name are turning up. In a letter I
had from Mr. L. Rawes - Send - he
said his son Alan had come
across some ladies at a flower
show at Crystal Palace
their name was Rawes, they
asked him about his forbears
and he referred them to his
father. Then sometime ago
we saw our name in the paper
in a Kendal incident - no doubt -
some of The Clan. but not very
desirables. It was in connection
with The Police in some street -
brawls or suchlike!.
At present the District is looking

very lovely. The hills are covered
with snow. Lovely blue skies
and sunshine but very bitter
N.E. winds, after a remarkably
mild time.

I am yours truly

A. Rawes

Notes:-
Annie Rawes was responible for preserving much material on the Rawes family.

The 'old people' were Betty's (Lanty Rawes's wife and grandmother of Annie and Percy ) parents who were James & Mary Lancaster of Patterdale, they lived to 96 & 102 respectively.

Mr. L Rawes from Send in Surrey was Lancelot Rawes, MBE, 1861-1942. Lancelot and Annie were 2nd cousins. His son Alan Newling Rawes was an horticulturalist, which possibly explains his presence at a flower show. He was a joint author of a book called 'Hardy Fruit Growing'.

Copied by Julian Rawes of Cheltenham.
