ROBERT RAWES OF HIGH HOUSE 1626-1703

1:
Extracts from two seventeenth-century rental books in the Levens Hall Estate Papers. The following entries were written between 1654-1680. Some of the transcribed pages mention members of the Huck family. They were neighbours to the Rawes family and lived at Borrow or Huck Bridge in Borrowdale on the Shap Fells where the great north road cut through the valley.

2:
An extract from the Shap Paines of 1670.

Robert Rawes lived at High House situated in the upper reaches of Borrowdale. Robert was baptised 18th March 1626, the son of Gerard Rawes of Fawcett Forest. Fawcett Forest is an estate administered from Forest Hall and includes at least the upper reaches of Borrowdale. Fawcett Forest estate was part of the Levens Hall Estate. In 1676 Robert Rawes appears to be making his first payment as tenant. Richard Kitchen of High House died in 1674, therefore it appears that the property passed from the Kitchen family to the Rawes family. Robert was buried Kendal, 24 June 1703 and his son Richard was styled 'of High House' when baptising his children in the early 17th century.

PAINES MADE & RENEWED BY YE JURIE IN THE XX OF KING CHARLES THE SECOND 1670

ffirst that none within this Lopp shall entertaine or keep any man or woman after he or she be knowne to have comitted ffornication,* whoevr entertains the man is to pay ... xiiis iiiid

Wee doe approve of the renewinge of this paine for that we are informed . . . . paine only wee doe not thinke fitt that Parents be hereby debarrd from allowing to their children subsistance, in case Such Parents take care to prevent the charge which otherwise may be imposed upon the parish

Wm Brisco Steward
Jo : Gunter

* I am afraid the motive of this paine is not the promotion of a higher morality so much as the prevention of the risk of charges on the parish. Here is a minute of business at a public vestry held in the parish church on the fifth day of July, 1793. It was agreed that a note for thirty pounds which Thomas Steadman and William Kilvington gave to the Overseers of the Poor for the time being should be transferred to the Rev. James Holme, Mr. Robert Rawes and Mr. John Robinson, for the maintenance of a bastard child of Ruth Furnass, which the aforesaid Thomas Steadman acknowledges himself father of, they giving sufficient bond to the parish. Signed by James Holme and Robert Rawes, and attested by William Noble, Thomas Walton, Thomas Dockray and John Toppin.
