Notes:-
There appears to be no mention of William in this record prior to 1747 and after 1759. What is notable however is
that William is described as already being 'Yeoman of Wetsleddale'.

A section taken from an extensive article on Westmorland slate titled 'The Slate Quarrying Industry in Westmorland: Part One: The valleys of Troutbeck, Kentmere and Longsleddale' by R. David, B.A., which connects William Rawes of Wetsleddale with Mosedale Quarry. William died in 1768. The article was published in the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, volume 87, 1987. (Wetsleddale Line) |
...... Unlike North Wales where whole communities became dominated by slate quarrying, and incomes were supplemented by small holdings often on marginal land, the quarrymen of the three valleys were easily absorbed into the community, and very often they were members of families who had lived in the valleys for generations. For example Robert Rawes of Wet Sleddale who was the tenant of Wrengill Quarry in 1788 and probably Mosedale Quarry as well, succeeded his father, William, at the latter. His son William also became tenant of Mosedale and his grandson Robert was indentured as an apprentice slate river in 1815. ......
