Yearly Fines
At this Court came Edmund Noble and took of the Lord of Custr Rent ------
the said Manor a Messuage and a Tenement in Sleddale of £ s d £ s d
the yearly customary fineable rent of fifteen shillings and
ten pence and now in the Hands of the Lord thereof to be
demised upon Decease of William Noble his father. To
have and to hold the said Messuage & Tenenamt with
the Appurtenances unto him the said Edmund Noble during
the joint Lives of the aforesaid Lord and the saidf Edmd
Noble at the will of the aforesaid Lord according to the custom 0: 15: 10 23: 00: 00
of the said Manor, paying therefore yearly to the Lord at
the Feast of Pentecost St Martin the Bisp [-] In winter
equally the said Yearly Rent and doing paying and
performing all other Rents, Fines, Dues, Duties and
services due payable for the same. And upon payment
of a Fine as in the margin hereof ye said Edmund
Noble was admitted Tenant.
John Parker was in like manner admitted Tenant of

At this Court came Agnes Horn and took of the Lord of the £ s d £ s d
said Manor, by the Demise of his aforesaid Steward all that dwellg
House Garth & Garden by Estimation half an acre, with the Appur=
tenances situate, lying & being at a place called Raishead of the
ancient yearly customary Rent of two shillings and now in ye
Lords hands to be demised upon the Alienation of Robert Will=
son. Mary his Wife and Mary Dennison by Deed Dated 2d of
Febry 1733 Consideration £16. To have and to hold the said
Premices with the Appurtances unto the said Agnes Horn & her
Assignes for the Term of the Life of the said Lord and the
Life of her the said Agnes Horn jointly according to the Custom
of the said Manor. Yielding and paying therefore yearly unto
the said Lord at the Days & Times accustomed the Rents, Fines
Dutiers & Services therefore due. And the said Agnes Horn having
paid to the said Lord as a Fine for this Admission the sum of

at this Court came Joseph Robinson and took of the Lord of the said Manour by the
demise of his aforesaid Steward All that Messuage and Tenement, and one close adjoining
to the Dwelling house called the Holme containing by estimation One acre and an halfe
one other close called High Holme containing two acres and an halfe, an Inclosure
called Shelleflat close containing three roods, a Land lying in Lings
containing one rood and two Cattle gates on Rosgill pasture, of the yearly customary rent
of nine shillings and five pence and now in the Lords hands to be demised upon the
alignation of William Robinson of Rossgill To have and to hold this said premises
with the appurtances unto the said Joseph Robinson and his Assigns for the Terme of the
life of the said Lord and the Life of the said Joseph Robinson jointly according to the
custom of the said Manor. Yielding and paying therefore yearly the Rents Fines
Duties and Services therefore due to the said Lord at the days and times accustom’d
And the said Joseph Robinson having paid to the said Lord as a Fine for his Admission

At an adjournment of the abovementioned Court held on the twentieth day of May 1737
the Jury above impanelled and Sworn to inquire for the Lord of the said Manour Do find
and present that William Blamire shall have a bestwee way for his Lands at
Roppechanadock, through John Lowis Maudlin: Ing, (that is to say) in all respects for
Tilling and Occupation of the Lands aforesaid, as appears by the evidence of
George Blamire and John Robinson, upon pain of 6s: 8d: for every disturbance
The Jury aforesaid do also find that John Robinson’s Lands lying on Laverick Height
Shall go over the Laverick[?] and so through John Lowis Maudlin Ing, to wit with
Bestwees and all other Tillage of this aforesaid Land upon pain of 6s: 8d: for every

his House in order fro the safeguard of his windows &c
John Milner has fell’d an ash Tree in Anthony Denny
Son’s ffence which the said Jury adjudge to be Anthony’s Tree, so they
order John Milner to pay Anthony Dennyson one penny

The Jury aforesaid Order and Agree that John Lowis Elder, wanting a
way for Vestures and Dung carrying to a land lying in Rossgill Field called
Hoppachanadell, and having no proof: Therefore by an old Agreement in the
Pain book of this Manor they agree that the said John Lowis Elder, shall have
a vesture & tillage way of his owne Land at the north End, and so overJames
Burton Land End, till he come on his son John’s Land, and so all along John
his Land till he come to the high Way.
Also It is ordered and agreed that the Towne Pasture of Rossgill being over charg’d
with Cattle, shall from time to time for the future by stinted as followeth, that
is to say for every Beast three years old a Whole gate, two yearings not
exceeding a Month over a whole gate, Three Twinters viz: two years old not each,
exceeding a Month over, two whole gates; also it is further agreed by all the Inhabi
tants who have any Cattle gates on the said pasture, that there shall be two
Inhabitants every year to wait at the pasture gate to see that the afore
said stint be duly kept, and so two of the next neighbours successively
every year to wait at the gate as aforesaid on the stinting day, And for
every one that makes default of the above said order shall be under the
penalty of paying 10s
Also The Inhabitants of Rossgill do mutually Agree, that when the Field Yog[?]
is set, every Inhabitant put in one Beast for every Acre for one Month.
And further that every person shall put in a Beast in that part
of the Towne field where their Lands lye, and that person that
has no Beast shall and may put in seven old sheep for a Beast
Gate, or Ten Lambs, and a Horse two Cattle gates upon pain

Thomas Lowis for the term of the life of the said Lord and the life of him the said

The Jury aforesaid do also find & present on the Evidence they have heard,
That John Miles ought to repair the way and the Bank by the Wayside, in his
Ground called crooked road, leading from Rosgil to Raisehead, but whereas
he pretends that he can produce some written Evidence by which it will appear
that the said way and Bank do not belong to him to repair they allow him six
weeks time (which is as long as he desires) to produce the said Evidence and
shew it to the Steward of this Court, and in case the same Steward is of
opinion from the Evidence the said John Miles shall in that time produce to
him, that the said way & Bank do not belong to the said John Miles to repair,
then this presentment is to be struck out, but if the said Steward is not of
that opinion then they order that the said John Miles shall repair the said way
and Bank, or find another good & sufficient way for such people as shall have
occasion to go that way within four weeks after he has so produced his evidence
to the Steward or in default thereof shall forfeit the Sum of Ten shillings.

Term of the Life of the said Lord and the Life of him the said James

are due and payable to him out of the said Premisses. And the said
James Burton having paid to the said Lord as a Fine for this administration

At tihs Court came George Simpson of Rosgill aforesaid and took of
the Lord of the said Manor by the Demise of his aforesaid Steward All that
Close lying within Rosgill aforesaid on a place called Bennyhow cont:
one acre and an half with all appurtenances thereto belonging of the
Ancient yearly customary Rent of One shilling and now in the Lords Hands

At this Court came George Cooper the younger of Hegdale in Shap
Parish Yeoman and took of the Lord of the said Manor by the Demise
of his aforesaid Steward the half of a Cow Grass or Cattle Gate in the
Pasture called Rosgill Town Moor with all appurtenances thereto
belonging of the ancient yearly customary Rent of two pence &

now in the Lords Hands to be Demised upon the Alienation of Joseph

At this Court came Thomas Hayton of Rosgill aforesaid Cordwainer
And took of the said Manor by the Demise of his aforesaid
Steward all that Dwelling House situate and being in Rosgill afore-

said with all appurtenances thereto belonging of the ancient yearly
customary Rent of Eight pence and now in the Lords Hands to be Demised
[In margin:] Fine £0 9s 0d
upon the Alienn of Edward Richardson of Rosgill aforesaid by Deed
dated 4th February 1741 cons: £3. To have and to Hold the said
Premisses with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Hayton for the
Term of the Life of the said Lord and the Life of him the said Thomas
Hayton jointly according to the custom of the said Manor. Yielding
paying and performing therefore unto the said Lord at the Days &
Times accustomed all such Rents Fines Dues Duties and Services as

of the said Manor by the Demise of his aforesaid Steward All that messuage
and Tenament called Beckside situate lying and being in Wet Sleddale
aforesaid consisting of two Garths and one parcel adjoining called the
Croft one close called the Crooks cont: one acre and an half another

Inclosure called Beckside Field cont: four acres, another close calld
Wet Close cont: one acre, and another pasture Close called Intack
cont: one acre and an half with all Appurtenances thereto belonging

the Lords Hands to be Demised upon the Alienation of Robert Noble
of Hill in Colside by Deed dated 2nd February 1741 cons: £100. To
Have and to Hold the said Premisses with the Appurtenances
unto the said Thomas Gaskill for the Term of the Life of the said
Lord and the Life of him the said Thomas Gaskill jointly according
to the custom of the said Manor. Yielding paying and performing
therefore unto the said Lord at the Days and Times accustomed
All such Rents Fines Dues Duties and Services as are due and
payable to him out of the said Premisses. And the said Thomas
Gaskill having paid to the said Lord as a Fine for this admission
the sum of seven pounds & Ten shillings xxxxxxxxx accordingly as aforesaid

At this Court came Jonathan Bowness of Keld in Shap
Parish and took of the Lord of this said Manor by the Demise of
his aforesaid Steward All that Messuage and Tenament called
New Ing situate lying and being in Wet Sleddle aforesaid consisting
of one Close called High Field cont: three Acres, another called

Low field cont: four acres, Long Close and Scale Fold cont: two acres
and a half, a Close called High Intack and Garths cont: one
acre and a pasture Close called Low Intack cont: one acre and an

yearly customary Rent of Fourteen shillings and now in the Lords
Hands to be Demised upon the alienation of Robert Noble of Hill
in Colside by Deed dated 2nd February 1741 cons: £140. To Have
& to Hold the said Premisses with the appurtenances unto the
said Jonathan Bowness for the Term of the Life of the said Lord &
the Life of him the said Jonathan Bowness jointly according to the
custom of the said Manor. Yielding, paying and affirming
therefore unto the said Lord at the Days and Times accustomed
All such Rents Fines Dues Duties and Services as are due and
payable to him out of the said Premisses. And the said Jonathan
Bowness having paid to the said Lord as a Fine for this administration
the sum of nine pounds & nine shillings xxxxxxxxxxx is accordingly as
aforesaid admitted Teneant.

That at this Court Anthony Dennison Complained against Richard Stewardson to debarring
him of a Foot Way down the said Richardson Stewardson’s Garth and the Jury aforesaid do
find and present on the Oath of John Miles Miller and Eliza Stephenson Widw that the
said Anthony Dennison has not any right to a Way down the said Garth any further
than to a Well, nor any other person or Persons whatsoever.
The Jury aforesaid do order that Richard Holin shall remove the Wall
in Rasehead Lane and lop and cut off the superfluous Branches so that the
Inhabitants of Rosgill and Wet Sleddale may have a sufficient cart way along
the same and that the said Richard Holin make the same way good betwixt
and the 7th of June next upon the pane to forfeit for his Default 10s.
They also order that John Miles remove the wall in the above
said Lane adjoining to his Field between and the 7th of June next upon
the pane to forfeit for his Default 5s.
There was an agreement in writing made 30th Decr 1741 & signed
by John Miles of Raiside of the one part and some Inhabitants of Rosgill
and Hegdale Vizt John Lowis, James Burton, John Abbot, Thomas
Cooper, George Simpson, George Cooper, John Castley, Thomas Bryham
and Robert Cooper of the other part, and on the 31st of May 1742 was
signed by the Jurors abovementioned of which agreement under
written is a copy vizt.
An agreement made Decr 30 1741 betwixt John Miles
of Race-side on ye one part, and the Inhabitants of Rosgill and Hegdale
of the other part, as followeth. I the said John Miles is to repair the
side Breach at Otter-bank Foot and to find Ground sufficient for a Cart
way adjoining to his Field. Likewise the said Inhabitants of Rosgill and
Hegdale is to work one Day to repair the said Land above Otterbank-foot
and to bring every Man six cart Loads of stones at John Miles request
and that the said John Miles and his Heirs is to up hold the said breach
at Otter-bank-foot for ever.
