SHAP, WESTMORLAND
St. Michael

NOTES
THE CHURCH and churchyard has been searched for Rawes inscriptions. There has been no large scale clearance of memorials from the churchyard and those still visable appear to be set in their original positions.

CEMETERY: Further up road to the east of the church is an extension to the churchyard. Within this cemetery is a small plot which contains the remains, along with their memorials, of those once interred at Mardale Church. The church and village were destroyed in the 1930's when Mardale reservoir was created. There were no Rawes memorials.

headstone
The bulk of the Rawes memorials lie to the left of the church in the above postcard.

Headstone topped by a Celtic style cross. The first part of the inscription is carved around the top edge of the cross. The memorial is positioned fairly close to the church on the southern side. The memorials of Gerrard, John and Richard appear to represent a family plot with a gap between the memorials of John and Gerrard. It is likely that the gap represents graves to other members of the family. It is also likely that graves of William & Isabel Rawes of Wetsleddale, from whom this group are descended, are buried nearby. (Augustus Line)
