SOME RAWES PORTRAITS

PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS
Paintings and photographs are some of the most evocative and tantalising records of the history of a family or locality or even in a wider sense, a nation. The haunting images of the native peoples of North America come to mind. Yet old photographs are not one of the first documents to be collected or copied. It is hoped that the inclusion of this section will stimulate more thought in the identification and preservation of these treasured images from the past.
I was most fortunate in inheriting a large number of old and identifiable family photographs, owing much to the work of my late father Bernard Rawes. He had inherited a small family album and a large number of photographs. He added to the collection by visiting other members of the family near and far and photographing their photographs. The bulk of this work was carried out in the 1980's and included the tracking down of some of our more distant relatives, the Dupré la Tour family in France and members of the Glennie's of Mexico, who kindly allowed him to photograph their collections of early photos and protraits. He was, in almost every case, able to identify the subjects. It is apparent that the family themselves had duplicates of particular photographs. I have, where possible, attempted to identify from whence the copies came. This material can now be viewed below under the headings of Portugal, Oporto and Lisbon.
With my own work on the wider Rawes name and through the generosity of many individuals such as the late Mary Rawes, of the Jamaica Line, and Sheila Tout of the Ratcliff line, who kindly allowed me to copy whole albums, a large number of photographs have been added to our collection. This section of the website has been created to make these images available to all.
Below each portrait can be found a cartouche containing information about the image, and where possible, an identification of the sitter or sitters.
There is virtually no end to the number of photographs that can be added to this section, as and when individuals donate copies of their own old photographs. An editorial decision will be made as to whether a photograph is suitable for inclusion, particularly more recent items.

Portraits are arranged by folder and branch in the same format as in the 'Branches' section.
