SOME RAWES PORTRAITS

MARY JANE ALBUM, JAMAICA LINE
This is one of two fine Victorian albums that have descended down the generations of the Jamaica Line to the present owner. One was started by Mary Jane Rawes and the other by Ruth her sister in law, the wife of Joseph William Rawes. The Ruth Bell album is probably the younger and is dealt with separately.
Trying to date an album can be more difficult than trying to date the photographs they contain. Photographs can be older than the album and in this case it cannot be ruled out that a photograph could have started off in one and ended up in the other.
Mary Jane never married and lived from 1959 to 1891, she died tragically of TB. This narrows down the time when the album was started. Mary Jane may have started the album or she may have taken over the album from her parents. It does appear to contain a number of photographs from an earlier generation. One clue is the note at the front of the album reading: Mary Jane Rawes, a gift from Miss or Mrs G H Dumbel Christmas 1877.
The present keeper of the bible is Judith Mary Rawes, daughter of Frank Rawes. Frank was the son of Joseph William and Ruth his wife née Bell. Annie Rawes, the sister of Mary Jane and Joseph William Rawes, was the historian of the family and it is through her that other family items have survived. Annie may have initially inherited the album and enhanced it with extra photographs. The album contains individuals from both the Rawes and the Burrows sides. This fact must be taken into consideration when trying to identify some of the un-named individuals.
Trying to identify the individuals within the album, unless already known, is very difficult. A number of the photographs are replicated in the Ruth Bell album.
The copying of these photographs was carried out by me in the 1990's by kind permission of Judith Mary. A skeleton pedigree of this branch has been constructed as an aid in identifying some of the sitters.
