PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS

Richard Rawes
1787-1831
Captain in the HEICS

Neither the provenance of this photocopy from the original portrait nor the whereabouts of the original is known. There are indications that the copy was from a printed work and originally taken from an oil painting, whether miniature, or full sized. It came into my hands some twenty years ago via my friend the late Jack Rawes of Adelaide, Australia (Adelaide Line). He had acquired it during a meeting with a member of the Besley family (Besley Line), now passed away. The Besley's are descended from Richard Rawes, HEICS Ships Purser. Whether the family possesses the original is not known. The portrait was described as of 'cousin' Richard Rawes, and since they believed that they were descended from Captain Richard Rawes they had assumed it was an 'unknown' cousin, therefore memory was lost as to who was depicted in the portrait. It is now known that both Richards sailed on the HEICS' ship the 'Warren Hastings'. Captain Richard left no living descendants but Purser Richard did and they married into the Besley family. From other evidence it is believed that Purser Richard was a beneficiary of Captain Richard. It is therefore deduced that the portrait is of Captain Richard Rawes.
