| THE RATCLIFF LINE ALBUM The Rawes family album, like most Victorian albums, is both pleasurable and fustrating to look at. A pleasure in the quality of its binding and in the number of supurb family portraits that it contains; frustrating in the number of unnamed members of the family. In this respect the Ratcliff album is typical of its age. The present keeper of the bible is Sheila Tout, daughter of Frank Tout and Nellie Rawes, the daughter of James and Hannah Rawes of Todmarden, Lancashire. The album was in the keeping of Sheila's mother Nellie who had inherited it from her parents James and Hannah Rawes, who married in 1881. Judging by some of the known sitters, it is most likely that the album dates from around the 1880's. Some of the unknown sitters look like they are from the Rawes side while some look more like the Ratcliff side. This however is very speculative as the same person can look very different in different photographs. The photographs are uniform in size and fit well into the shaped slots in the album. This lends support to the idea that, at least at the beginning, many of the photographs were taken at one time. This helps in identification and also suggests that the album was purchased for a special occasion, such as a wedding. The copying of these photographs took place back in the 1980's and unfortunaly the order in which some of the photographs were arranged in the album is now uncertain. Four pages from the album however were photographed as a whole as these contained the unidentified sitters. This arrangement has been maintained on this page. Judging by the dress, the elder generation represented in the photographs may have been born in the early years of the 19th century. A skeleton pedigree of the Rawes family has been constructed as an aid in identifying some of the sitters, that is if they are Rawes.
