Elizabethe by the grace of god of England fraunce and Ireland quene defendour of the faith etc. I Gerard Rawes of Hartsopp
beinge sicke in bodie nevethelesse hole in mynd and in perfitt Remembrance (god be praised) doth make this my
last will and testament in manere and forme followinge (viz) fyrst I give and bequethe my soule to Almightie
God my maker and Redemer and my bodie to be buried within the churchyeard of Patterdale paying all
dewties theirunto belonginge dew and accustomed. Item I give to Gerard Rawes my youngest sonne twentie
wedders to be delivered Imediatly after it shall please god to call me to his mercie. Item I give to Agnes
Rawes my dowghter three poundes of lawfull Englishe money beinge now in the handes of Lancelot
Rawes my Eldest sone to be payed by the said Lancelot Rawes unto the said Agnes Rawes
at the three next Michaelmas Dayes after my discease. Item I give to the said Agnes a twynter
blacke styrke. Item my will is that my executors shall pay unto George Bucher my sone in law
fiftie shepp out of the hole goodes accordinge to the custome of the countrie. Item I will that the
said George shall have two kyne delivered at and upon the feastes of Saints Phillip and Jacob the
Apostles, beinge the fyest day of May next after my death. Item I give to Robert Dowsonne
- xii. The Rest of my goodes moveable and unmoveable my dettes payed, legaces geaven
and funerall expenses discharged, I give to Robert Rawes, Gerard Rawes and Agnes

NOTES:
- Because the year started on March 25th, according to the reckoning of the time, this will was written
on January 4th 1592. It was written by William Harrison - note 'doth, in place of 'do' in line 5 - so Gerard
died sometime between the 4th Jan and the date that probate was granted - February 21st of the same year.
Is the parish register extant? The feast of Sts Philip and James was May 1st. Four children are mentioned'.
there must have been another girl to be wife of George Bucher. Hartsop is about 2 miles south of Patterdale.

Bigge and Haver: Bigg = a hardy Barley of hardy growth suited to poorer soils and northern latitudes.
Haver = a northern word for Oats.

Why = a northern word for Heifer. Styrk = a bullock or heifer usually between 1 & 2 years old.

Hendles, cheare and cam: among the collection of wood ware: Cheare: = chair, or? chearne = churn. Hendles and
Cam doubtful. There is no table etc. listed as such. Kersett = possibly Cresset. Girdle = griddle?. Puder =
pewter. Ark =chest Bease quarters = bacon & salt meat for winter. Wheile = spinning wheel.
