MARY RAWES OF BROMLEY

Will of Mary Rawes of Bromley, Kent. Made 16th May 1842. Proved 1st June 1849 at London. (PRO PCC Prob.11/2095). (Bromley Line)
This is the last Will and Testament of me Mary Rawes of Widmore Lane Bromley Kent reflecting deeply / on the uncertainty of human life I write these few directions before I have / done that should it please the Almighty to remove me from this world / my wishes may be known.

First It is my earnest request that I may if possible be buried in the / same grave with those I loved best on earth my dearest father & mother / & brother trusting in the mediation of a gracious Saviour we may all / lie together to a joyful Resurection.

Whereas I am possessed from legacies left me by my dear mother & / her brother the Rev. Revd Chs[?] Thompson of two third shares of a small estate / called Greengate situated in the parish of Brampton in the county of / Westmorland & the remaining third share belonging to my cousin / Matthew Thompson Esq of Manningham Lodge in the parish of Bradford / county of York we agreed to prevent it being again divided to leave / the said estate of Greengate to vis; the said Matthew Thompson's Esqr second son Benjamin Peile[?] Thompson I therefore by this instrument leave the said estate to B.P.T. but it is my wish that till he come of age / Mary Thompson of Kirkby Stephen in the county of Westmorland may continue / as she has hitherto done to receive the rent of the said estate & appropriate / it to her own use.

I give & bequeath to Mary Ann Rawes daughter of Richard Rawes / of Stratford Grove in the county of Essex five hundred pounds of lawful mo / ney of Great Britain & also to her brother William Wilson Rawes the / same sum of five hundred pounds should either of them die unmarried / & without child or children the survivor to have the whole To Mary Thomp / son & Betty Thompson her sister formerly of Greengate in the parish of / Brampton & count of Westmorland but now living in Kirkby Stephen /in the same County five hundred pounds share and share alike in the case of / either's death the whole to the survivor To Marianne Rawes & Elizabeth / Rawes daughters of the late Revd John Rawes of Stamfordham in the / county of Northumberland each thirty pounds To my two goddaughters / Mary Elizabeth Wood daughter of Major General Wood of St Mary Abbots / Terrace Kensington & Catherine Mary Skran[?] daughter of Thomas Skran[?] / Esqr of Sharpur[?] Street each twenty pounds And it is my will that all the / foregoing legacies may be paid free of duty which I desire may be paid / out of the residue of my estate.

Should Mary Sandy be living with me at the time of my decease / I give and bequeath to her a years wages & a suit of mourning To my / other servants I may have half a years wages & mourning To the Bromley / Benevolent Society I give ten guineas All the remainder of my estate / real & personal plate linen china &c &c I give & bequeath to my dear brother / & sister William Thompson Rawes & Elizabeth Rebecca Palmer share and / share alike I find I have omitted to say all my just & lawful debts of which / I trust to leave few and any funeral expenses are to be first paid. Signed / sealed & delivered this sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one / thousand eight and forty two in the presence of - Mary Rawes. (ls) Joseph Rawes - Prideaux Selby.

In the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, In the goods of Mary Rawes Spinster deceased.

Appeared Personally Joseph Rawes of / Bromley in the county of Kent Gentleman one of the subscribed witnesses / to the last Will and Testament of the said Mary Rawes late of Widmore / Lane Bromley aforesaid Spinster deceased hereunto annexed and bearing / date the sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight / hundred and forty two and made oath that on the said sixteenth day / of May the said testatrix duly executed her said Will by signing her name / at the foot or did thereof to wit below the attestation clause on the fifth / page in the presence of this deponent and of Prideaux Selby the other sub / scribed witness thereto who were both present at the same time and this / deponent and the said Prideaux Selby hereupon attested and subscribed / the said Will in the presence of the said testatrix and of each other and / the deponent referring to the said Will as contained on four sides of one / sheet of Letter Paper and the commencement of another sheet thereof / made oath that the same is now in the same plight and condition as / when the said Will was so executed by the said testatrix as aforesaid / Joseph Rawes. On the 24th day of May 1849 the said Joseph Rawes / was duly sworn to the truth of this affidavit before me: J.E.P. Robertson Surr. Present John Nelson. Not. Pub. [Notary Public]

On the 1st June 1849 Admon (with the Will annexed) of the Goods Chattels / and Credits of Mary Rawes late of Widmore Lane Bromley in the county / of Kent spinster deceased was granted to Elizabeth Rebecca Palmer widow / the sister and the surviving Residuary Legatee named in the said Will / having been first sworn to administer.
