1/ In the Name of God Amen; ye ninth day of May, anno Dni 1644, I Robt Rawes of Borrowdale, sicke in bodie, but of good & p[er]fect remembrance
2/ (laud & praise be unto almighty god) do make & ordaine this my last will & testamt in mannr & forme following; ffirst & principally I commend
3/ my soule into ye hands of almighty god my Creator & redeemr fully trusting through ye pretious death of his deare son Jesus Christ my lord &
4/ Savior to have free remission of all my sins, & my body to be buried in my parish Church yard at Kirkby Kendall, paying all dues belonging ye same
5/ And for the temporalle state wch god, hath lent me here on earth I devise it as followeth; ffirst I give my messuage & tenemts in Borrowdale
6/ wth their appertennts to my grandchild Richard Rawes & his heires for ever; & it is my minde & will tht my said grandchild Richard
7/ Rawes shalbe admitted & sett Tennant of the same as shortly as may be after my death: (alwayes pvided that my son Richard Rawes
8/ shall have ye occupacion & pfitt of my said messuage & tenemts for ten yeares next following after my death, & no longer, Itm I give
9/ unto Elizabeth Rawes ye eldest daughter of my son Richard Rawes fforty pounds; Itm I give unto his second daughter Jane Rawes
10/ fforty pounds; Itm I give & bequeath unto his youngest daughter, An Rawes fforty pounds; Itm I give unto Gerard Rawes my brother
11/ all my Cloaths whatsoever except my Cloak & hatt, & I forgive him seven pounds wch he owes me; & it is my minde, yt my
12/ executor shall pay ffive pounds to James Nicholson, wch my said brother Gerard Rawes oweth unto him, & for wch I stand bound
13/ By bond, to the same shalbe paied out of my goods. Itm I give to John Jackson who dwelleth now at Levens xxs & to his sister
14/ Mabell Jackson, who dwelleth now at High House xxs. Itm I give & bequeath to Robt Lowther ye son of John Lowther xls. Itm I
15/ give to William Robinson who dwelleth at High House ten groats; Itm I give & bequeath to Jane Rawes my brother Lancelot
16/ daughter twelve pounds & two happins, two shirts, bolster, blankett & chaffbed now in y xxe bed shee has on, & also I give her y xxe
17/ bedstock & ye same. Itm I give to Gerard Rawes the younger xxs. & I give to his brother Robt Rawes xxs. the rest of
18/ all my goods & chattles whatsoever moveable & unmoveable (my debts, legacies & funerall expences discharges) I give & bequeath
19/ to my son Richard Rawes, whom I make my sole executor. Supvisoes hereof I make & appoint Anthony Stevenson & William
