In the name of God Amen The sixth day of November in Anno Dm 1637 I Miles Rawes of Orrestyeat in the Parrish
of Windermer and County of Westmorland Sheerman sicke in my mortall bodye but of good and perfect rememberance praised be God to the same doe make
and ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following. ffirst I give and bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty
God my Creator fully trusting and steadfastlye believing throughe meritte Death and passion of Jesus Christ myni[?] alone Saviour and onely
Redeemer to have remission of all my sinnis and my souli to inheritt everlasting life And my bodye to be buryed in Windermer
churchyard with all accustomed duetye thereunto belonging. Itm it is my will and mynd and I doe give my Tenemt att Croftes of the yearly rent
of vid with all Appurtenances thereunto belonging to be sold (after the widow estate of Allice my wife) by my Supervisos hereafter mentioned but att
their discretion unto whom by vertue hereof. I give full power and Authority so grant and convey the same and every part thereof. And I doe
give so my sonne Myles Rawes xl out of the price of the same. And the remayninge of the price thereof I give to be equallie divided amongst
my six children vizt Myles John Agnes Elizabeth Jane and El-- [Allice] And if any of my said six children happen to dye before there part[?] due
portion of the price of the foresaid Tenemt fall due unto them that then it thall equallie be divided amongst the survivors. Item it is my Will
and mynd That all my Debts shalbe discharged out of my whole goodes. And the remaynder to be equallie divided amongst my foresaid six
children: Excepting some foresaid ligacies hereafter expressed vizt I give to my said sonne Myles One tenter One pair of sheereing theeres and
one sheerboard w[hi]ch he liketh best Itm I give to my basebegotten sonne James Rawes xxs to be paid out of my goodes wthin a yeare and a halfe
next after the sayle of the same The rest of all my Goods moveable and unmoveable not bequeathed my Debts legacyes and funerall expences
discharged I give and bequeath to my foresaid sonne Myles and my daughter Jane whom I make joint Executors of this my last will and
Testament Supervisos to see this my last will and Testamt trust fairlie performed I appoint George Dixon my neigbor Thomas Collinson Robert
Byrkett Penrith[?] and John Dixon desyreing them as my full trust is in them for Gode sake to see this my last will and Testamt to the uttmost
of there power faithfully executed. And for their paines to be taken herein I give to every one of them iis recorde hereof George Dixon
Robert Byrkett John Dixon and Willm Robinson.

The Condition of this Obligation is such that I the above bounden

doe well & truly peruse & forme & fullfill the last Will & Testament of Myles
Rawes late of Applethw. aforesaid their father Deceased
so farr as by law they are bound & as the said deceased goods will extend And
of all the said deceased goods rights credits & cattells exhibit into this Court A
true & pfect Inventorie And also of their execution of the said will & administration
of the said goods & presents from time to time & at all times hereafter make declare
a true & just accompt when thereunto they shalbe lawfully razed as required. And
lastly for ever save & keep harmeles the abovenamed Revd and father in God the
Bishop of Chester his heires & successors & all other this officers & Ministers against
all psons & from all suits casses & said empuities[?] whatsoever by reason of the pr--ss-s
That thou this prsent Obligation to be voyd & of no force or use to remaine & be
in full power & ber---.

  2. Hack is a pickaxe, mattock or large hoe.
  3. Wantoe (wantow) is a rope for tying things on to a horse.
  4. Sheerboard in related to shearing of sheep.
  5. Miles Rawes lived at Orrestyeat in Applethwaite near Windermere. Yeat is an old northern name for a gate.
  6. Miles mentions his land at Crosses.
  7. A Robert Rawes was a tenant at the Crosses in 1560 & 1574.
  8. A William Rawes was a tenant at Crosses in 1570.
  9. A John Rawes' wife was of the Crosses when she was buried at Bowness 28 July 1622.
  10. Alice, the wife of Miles Rawes was buried at Bowness on 11 Mar 1657.
  11. Elizabeth, bap Bowness 2 July 1613, dau of Miles of the Crosses.
  12. James, bap Bowness 22 Dec 1613, son of Miles Rawes of the Crosses.
  13. Alice, bap Bowness 25 Mar 1620, dau of Miles Rawes. She married at Bowness 1 May 1644 to George Parke of Calgarth.
  14. A John Rawes of the Crosses had John, bap Bowness 26 Feb 1660, buried the following year, and Anne bap Bowness 25 Jan 1662.

The Crosses and nearby Hole Head in Applethwaite were occupied by branches of the Rawes Family in the 16th and 17th Centuries.
